While the Shure SM7B has become an essential live streaming, podcasting and vlogging tool, it came with one major drawback - a super-low output. With the Shure SM7dB, that problem is made a thing of the distant past. After plugging in the original SM7B, you would have to push the gain up considerably before reaching a reasonable input level, but because the new Shure SM7dB microphone has been upgraded with a built-in preamp, an extra 28 decibels of noiseless, transparent gain is added to signal, even before it reaches the interface or mixer. This immediately results in the warm and supple audio demanded by radio-ready speech, vocals and instrument recordings, even when this studio microphone is hooked up to cheaper interfaces or equipment fitted with weaker preamps.

The built-in, active preamp is also adjustable. So the gain boost can be flipped between +18dB and +28dB as needed or the preamp can be bypassed completely to give you the performance of the original SM7B. So, with the SM7dB, you're essentially getting all of the perks of the original model, but without the pitfalls.

The Gold Standard for Live Broadcasting

Efficient magnetic shielding and operational reliability are an absolute must when it comes to live broadcasting, which is exactly what the SM7dB offers. And, while this is a dynamic microphone, the frequency range is especially wide and the sound is incredibly natural. That wide dynamic range also sets the SM7dB up for recording studios, where it's a great pick for miking up bass and guitar amplifiers and even drums and brass instruments. To counter the dull sound caused by the proximity effect that happens when a cardioid microphone like the SM7dB is used to close-mike a sound source, an HPF switch has been fitted which, when active, filters out any overbearing bass frequencies. The high-mid frequencies can also be given a boost via the Presence switch.
