Seminar: Display Colourimetry for Film and Television
Time: 12:30
Would you struggle to explain to your colleagues or clients the differences between rec.709, DCI-P3, DolbyVision, and HLG? The last fifteen years has seen a huge change in the industry; no longer are we dealing with just one colourspace/white-point/transfer-function but digital cinema and the HDR streamers – Netflix/Amazon/Disney/Apple/BBC-iPlayer – mean we have to deal with several display standards. This leads to confusion; in no small part due to the huge difference in costs between an HDR mastering monitor and cheaper options that do “HDR emulation” - where you can we deploy them outside the grading suite? All display technologies have their foibles and we’ll go over some of those. Phil will cover the reasons for calibrating and the different display standards. He’ll also bring a few bits of advice about configuring the grade suite for the best results and how facilities can look after colour accuracy without breaking the bank.

Speaker: Phil Crawley
Phil is recognized as one of the UK’s leading engineers for monitor calibration, an expertise built upon decades of diverse technical experience. His career began in the eighties at BBC Television News, following a foundation in mathematics and programming. This analytical background led to him running engineering for major Soho post-production facilities in the nineties, before taking on the demanding role of technical supervisor during the formative years of Big Brother. Today, he uses this extensive background to expertly calibrate broadcast monitors and projectors for a wide range of applications.
Seminar: Understanding and Solving your Storage Problems
Time: 14:00
Today, data integrity, availability, and security are critical to all businesses. Everyone has experienced storage problems, and not just failures. Capacity limits, access, costs, and operational expenditure are related problems that frequently affect us all. This session overviews the storage technologies available today, looking at spinning-disk, solid-state alternatives, the cloud, and LTO – that’s right, tape is not dead. One technology is not better than the other but understanding the value and concessions of each, and considering best practices, is key to implementing a storage infrastructure that works for you.

Speaker: Richard Warburton
Richard has been at the forefront of digital storage solutions for over 24-years having started in digital audio at the turn of the millennium. Specialising in the media and entertainment industry, Richard has rounded knowledge of all levels of production from pro photo and independent video production, through broadcast and cine that extends beyond storage technologies and their implementation. Richard is part of the management team at Global Distribution, a leading distributor of technology to creative industries, and Symply, a UK manufacturer of thoughtfully engineered storage systems incorporating disk, tape, and cloud solutions.

This seminar offers a rare opportunity to hear from a panel of seasoned industry experts about the fascinating craft of Colour Grading. Join us as we uncover how these visual storytellers translate a Director's vision into a tangible visual reality.
